Christmas is supposed to be a joyous time of year to enjoy with our friends and family. Unfortunately crime rises during the Christmas period with more and more home burglaries taking place. Whether you are staying at home or going away to celebrate Christmas this year there are a few simple steps you can take to ensure your home and family remain safe.
Simple But Effective Trickery
There are some really simple ways to stop a potential break in, these simple tricks could be the difference between a burglar breaking in or not.
- Leave a radio playing- If there is activity noise coming from inside it makes it appear as if someone is at home.
- Leave lights on a timer- If you are spending the Christmas holidays away from home organize a timer so lights turn on and off.
- Use an outside motion detector light- If a burglar is approaching your house and suddenly a light turns on exposing them they are far more likely to decide against breaking in.
- Avoid large bushes and shrubbery- Make sure there is nothing in your garden that a burglar can conceal themselves behind.
Secure Windows And Doors
A known way for burglars to gain entry to your home is through patio doors. They are not as sturdy as front doors and a burglar can easily break in this way. You can make your patio doors burglar proof by putting a metal pipe in the middle bottom track which the door slides open on, the pipe needs to be the same length as the track.
Often if you have a door from your house on the inside of the garage you will leave this unlocked. A lot of us think that if the garage is locked why does the inside door need to be locked? If a burglar did gain entry to your garage locking the door could stop them entering your home and vice versa. Minimise theft by always keeping this door locked. Make your garage as secure as possible by installing roller garage doors. These doors are best in terms of security as they are very strong and can only be opened by a remote control which you can keep on you every time you leave the house.
Finally to ensure your home is safe this Christmas avoid having any expensive items on view from the outside, such as TV’s, computers and even presents.
